News | March 25, 2023
MFM in Collaboration with Nations Carey's Patch visited Nghalchawm Refugee Camp and distributed supplies.
Date: 25th March, 2023
Location: Nghalchawm Refugee Camp, 37 km from Aizawl
Items distributed:
1) 12 bags of rice (60 kg each)
2) 4 bags of potato (55kgs each)
3) One bag of Nutrella
4) 4 bags of Dal (45 kgs each)
5) 2 boxes of biscuits
6) 60 packs of sanitary pads
7) Vegetable seeds
Currently there are 89 refugees living at the camp out of which 29 of them are children under 18 years old and 15 of them are above 60 years old. There is no serious illness among the refugees at the time of the visit. The refugees at the camp are members of the Matu tribe from Myanmar's Chin state, which has been severely affected by the military government.
The main concern remains food as there have been no other major donations since the last time we visit (15th September, 2023). The host community has provided them with water and electricity for free. Children are able to go to school for free at Nghalchawm Primary School while the older children attend the High School at Sihhmui Refugee School.
There is very little scope of finding work at nearby villages at the time according to them. A small plot of land was donated by the host community for cultivation where they grow seasonal crops. Bigger and more water storage units are needed as there are only a few water tanks which was shared by the whole camp.
